Around a.d. 1000 later, a group called the mound builders lived in the area that would become Georgia.
The Italian explorer Christopher Columbus first set foot in America in 1492 on an island in the Caribbean Sea he called the San Salvador. Columbus's voyage had been paid for by Spain. It was the search for gold that brought Spanish explorer Hernando de soto into the Georgia area.
In the Georgia area, de soto and his men met the creek, who were friendly toward them and brought them food. But the spaniards still forced many creek into slavery. Many native Americans died in what would become Georgia. And millions died all in North America.
De soto and his men never found gold in Georgia or anywhere else the explored.
The spaniards established a fort in Georgia on saint Catherine's island in 1566. Soon after, the Spanish built more villages and forts along the Georgia coast. Georgia was important to Spain because it was located next to the land it claimed to be called Florida. The Spanish were now in control of Florida and Georgia. The Spanish brought in priest to teach the native Americans about Christianity. Suring the late 1500s, the Spanish built small settlements and churches along the Georgia coast.The English also went to Georgia in large numbers. With lots of empty and open land, Georgia was a great place to start a farm.as more people from England and other European nations moved there, Spain lost control of Georgia. In 1629, Britain claimed Georgia. The British colony of Georgia might not have been founded if life in the 18th century Britain had been better.
Georgia was the last english colony to be founded. In 1732, the land was seperated from South carolina and given to James Oglethorpe by King George II. Oglethorpe named the colony Georgia after his king.
The reasons for founding Georgia were different than for the other thirteen colonies. The other colonies were founded as either moneymakers ventures or as places for religious freedom. Georgia was founded as a place where English prisoners could pay off their debt to society. In England, if a person was too poor to pay their bills the goverment would be put in jail. Oglethorpe talked King George II into releasing the poor people from jail and sending them to build the colony.
Since the spanish ruled the lands now known as Flordia, Georgia was also settled as a buffer zone between Spanish Flordia and the English colonies. Many battles were fought between the Spanish and English settlers on the southern Georgia border.
